GRIMM WORLD
23-02-03 | Open since September 2015, is a new exhibition on the Grimm Brothers in a purpose-built centre on Kassel Weinberg. It targets a variety of visitor groups: children and senior citizens, families and school groups, experts and laypersons, covering all fields of interests from art and language to fairy tales. Rich modern exhibition formats guarantee eye-opening effects, giving opportunity to investigate and actively experience the Grimms on 1,600 m².
Modern presentation allows for space to explore and impart knowledge by means of scientifically based information, interactive approaches and real-life relevance. The exhibition design provides both arrangement and illustration, unfolding its own artistic expression and following GRIMM WORLD’s leading principle: “Fabulous from A to Z“.
Housed by its multi-award-winning architecture, the exhibition is organised in glossary format based on the Grimm Dictionary. 25 expressions such as ÄRSCHLEIN (little arse), DORNENHECKE (thorn hedge) or PHANTASIEGESTALT (fantasy figure) form the headings of particular exhibition areas.
This approach involves a detachment from the traditional chronological and historical narrative form, thus turning GRIMM WORLD Kassel into a dynamic experience. Playful and informative elements, as well as linguistic, literary and cultural insights offer visitors new approaches to the rich abundance of the Grimms‘ work and to their social and political lives.
Different formats such as valuable originals, film and sound documentation, multimedia applications and artistic installations ensure an exciting visit. One of GRIMM WORLD’s most noticeable highlights are the Grimm Brothers‘ personal copies of the Children‘s and Household Tales of 1812 and 1815 along with their handwritten notes and amendments.
In 2005, these working copies were included in the UNESCO “Memory of the World“ Register. Various works by contemporary and internationally renowned artists are integrated into the exhibition; amongst others Ai Weiwei’s “Colored Roots“, specifically created for GRIMM WORLD by the Chinese artist and donated to Kassel Town, the fascinating installation on the German Dictionary by Ecke Bonk, entitled “Random Reading / Book of Words”, which already captivated the public througout the documenta XI and Alexej Tchernyi’s three-dimensional illustrations of the dictionary’s history.
Children also get the chance to discover the world of the Brothers Grimm by themselves: the “World Tour”, a children’s treasure hunt and quiz, guides them through the world of fairy tales and language. In addition, guided tours tailored to your interests offer new and varied insights into the life and work of the Brothers Grimm.
This exhibition centre wrapped in its unique and attractive architecture on Kassel’s historical Weinberg Hill, has become Kassel’s most visited facility in a blink of an eye, without being a museum in the traditional sense. Herewith, Kassel has become a prominent Grimm Town in every sense. 200,000 international visitors attending this more recent and permanent exhibition throughout the first 18 months of its existence bear testimony to the Grimms‘ great popularity, even outside of Germany and Europe.
